The crowd on the Zone, the amusement strip of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, is what sets this view apart from other pictures of the fair's grand palaces. The exposition ran through most of 1915 on San Francisco's waterfront to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The Zone was the fair's lively side, with rides, sideshows, and novelty attractions drawing large numbers of visitors.
