The Court of the Universe was the grand central plaza of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which San Francisco held in 1915 to mark the opening of the Panama Canal. Its colonnades and sculptures framed the Tower of Jewels, a tall, glittering structure that became the fair's most recognizable landmark. The exposition was built on reclaimed bayfront land, and its neoclassical and sculptural style drew large crowds during the year it ran.
