This stereograph shows the dome of the Palace of Fine Arts rising above its reflecting lagoon, lit for the night views that gave the fair its "Fairyland" nickname. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition opened in San Francisco in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal and the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and fire. Architect Bernard Maybeck designed the Palace of Fine Arts in a classical style, and it was one of the few exposition buildings meant to stand apart from the temporary structures around it. Keystone View Company, a major publisher of stereo cards, produced cards like this one for home viewers.
