The Zone was the amusement midway of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the 1915 fair that San Francisco held to mark the opening of the Panama Canal. This stereograph shows its lights after dark, when the fairgrounds were known for electric illumination that earned the exposition the nickname "Jewel City." The word "gay" in the title was a common period term for lively or festive, and the card's paired images were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, which gave the crowds and lit façades a sense of depth. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, one of the largest publishers of stereographs in the early twentieth century.
