The Panama-Pacific International Exposition, held in San Francisco in 1915, was built to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and fire. This postcard captures the fair's grand scale, the kind of pictorial view that visitors bought by the thousands to send home as proof they had seen the spectacle. The exposition's buildings were designed in a dreamlike Beaux-Arts style, many of them temporary structures of plaster and staff meant to shine under electric light. Its rapid rise from a damaged city to a showpiece of American ambition makes the card a useful window into the period.
