A color halftone advertises Whistler clear Havana cigars, with the artist's name serving as the selling point at the Palace Hotel cigar store in San Francisco. The Palace, which opened on Market Street in 1875, was one of the city's best-known hotels, and its retail counters drew both travelers and local businessmen. Commercial tie-ins that borrowed a celebrated painter's name were common by the 1890s, and Whistler, who was known for guarding his reputation, was not pleased by many of them. The Whistleriana collection that holds this piece was assembled by Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell, who documented his career and preserved ephemera like this one.
