The Cliff House, a hotel and restaurant perched on the bluffs at the edge of the Pacific above Seal Rocks, is the subject here, shown in the middle of a blaze. The building was a popular destination for San Franciscans and visitors, reached by streetcar and known for its ocean views and seaside dining. This print was made by W.E. Worden, a San Francisco photographer whose views of the city circulated widely in the early 1900s. Its copyright registration and numbering suggest it was sold as a commercial view, so it preserves how a local landmark's loss was recorded and marketed to the public at the time.
