The Cliff House sits on a bluff above Seal Rocks, a cluster of offshore rocks where sea lions haul out in large numbers, and that pairing of resort building and wildlife is what sets this view apart from the city's other waterfront scenes. The first Cliff House was built in the 1860s on the Pacific shore west of the city, and it drew visitors by carriage and later by rail, who came for the ocean views, the dining rooms and the chance to watch the animals on the rocks. Several buildings have stood on the site since, each rebuilt after fire or storm damage, and the current structure reflects that long run of replacement. The rocks themselves remain a local landmark tied closely to the neighborhood's identity.
