The Cliff House sits on a headland above the Pacific at the northwestern edge of San Francisco, where the city meets Golden Gate Park and the Great Highway. This c1902 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold hand-colored and sepia-toned views of American scenery and resorts to tourists and travelers at the turn of the twentieth century. The building had been a popular seaside hotel and restaurant since the 1860s, drawing visitors who came to dine, walk the cliffs, and watch seals on the offshore rocks. Caption tracings on the original card point to its place among the era's parks, beaches, and hotels.
