The Westerfeld House, completed in 1889, is a Victorian residence whose ornate woodwork and asymmetrical massing reflect the Queen Anne style that dominated San Francisco's residential building boom in the late 1800s. This c1946 photograph captures it more than half a century after construction, when many of the city's Victorians were aging, divided into flats, or threatened by redevelopment. Its record notes that some details are unverified and cites a name from a shelflist card, so the particulars of its ownership and photographer should be checked against the original catalog. Still, the picture offers a useful view of how the city's wood-frame houses looked in the years just after World War II.
