The Holbrook house at the corner of Washington Street and Van Ness Avenue is the subject here, a residence the record dates to 1885, though the catalog entry itself is only partly verified. Van Ness was once one of San Francisco's grandest boulevards, lined with mansions built by merchants and financiers after the city's rapid growth in the later nineteenth century. Many of those houses were lost in the 1906 earthquake and fire, so a building of this age photographed around 1946 is a reminder of how much of the older city survived the disaster and how much did not.
