Few places in 1860s San Francisco drew more carriage traffic than the Cliff House, a resort perched on the bluffs at the city's western edge where the land ends at Ocean Beach. Offshore, the Seal Rocks were a popular sight, and visitors came to watch the sea lions while looking out over the Pacific. This albumen print is one half of a stereograph, the kind of paired photograph viewed through a stereoscope to produce a sense of depth, and it was issued in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. The Library holds only this half of the pair, so the second view is missing, and the caption details come from an old card whose accuracy has not been verified.
