Few hotels in San Francisco carried as much weight as the Palace, which banker William Ralston opened on New Montgomery Street in 1875 as one of the largest and most lavish hotels in the country. This glass negative, made around 1906, captures the building in the years before the April 18 earthquake and the fires that followed gutted much of its interior. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-scale views of American cities and landmarks, catalogued the image, and its subject tags point to the disaster that reshaped the city's downtown. The hotel was rebuilt and reopened in 1909.
