Turk Street, photographed from the corner of Market and Mason streets, is one of the few views in this set that the catalog ties directly to earthquake damage. The April 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed destroyed much of San Francisco, and c1906 places this glass negative in the period when the city was documenting its streets and ruins. Market Street was the city's main diagonal boulevard, so a corner there would have seen heavy foot and streetcar traffic before the disaster. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued these views as photographic prints and postcards, was one of the largest commercial picture makers of the era.
