Few corners of downtown San Francisco were more central than the junction of Third, Kearney and Market Streets, and this view shows it in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake and fire, with debris being cleared from the roadway. In the weeks after the April 18 quake, crews worked by hand and with carts and wagons to haul away brick, timber and twisted metal, a slow job that kept the commercial core largely unusable for months. The picture was published by the Detroit Publishing Co., a firm that sold many scenic and documentary views of American cities to a national market. Its catalog number, 09359, marks it as one of the company's photographs of the disaster's aftermath.
