The debris on California Street is the detail that sets this view apart from the many San Francisco pictures of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Workers and wagons are shown clearing rubble from the street in the weeks after the disaster, when the city was still digging out from the damage. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American places, sold such scenes to the public as records of the event. Because the caption card is unverified, the exact date and crew shown here are uncertain, but the scene reflects the wider cleanup that followed the quake and fire of April 1906.
