Stereograph No. 9232 shows Chinatown in San Francisco around 1898, when the neighborhood was already a popular stop for visitors touring the city. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, which B.L. Singley established in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and which sold stereoviews in large numbers for viewing through a hand stereoscope at home. Because the image was made to be seen in three dimensions, two slightly offset views give the street scenes a depth that a flat print cannot. The date and location come from an unverified caption card, so they should be read as approximate.
