Fish Alley, a narrow passage in San Francisco's Chinatown, is the setting here, where two men are shown cleaning fish and chickens at work. Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who settled in San Francisco in the 1890s, made many pictures of the neighborhood's streets and tradespeople, and this one is dated around 1899. The alley was a working district of markets and food sellers, and Genthe's close view of everyday labor offers a glimpse of commercial life in Chinatown before the 1906 earthquake and fire reshaped the city. The date and caption come from an unverified card, so the exact timing is worth keeping in mind.
