This stereograph is catalogued under the Presidio, the Army post on the northern tip of San Francisco, and its caption card also lists African American soldiers and Army units. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers around 1900, when people viewed them through handheld viewers for home entertainment and armchair travel. The Presidio had been an Army installation since the Spanish colonial period, and in the years around 1900 Black regiments, including the 24th and 25th Infantry, were stationed in the city before many of their soldiers were sent to the Philippines. The caption data is unverified, so the exact unit and scene are worth checking against other sources.
