This view shows Newspaper Row, the nickname for the stretch of San Francisco streets where several daily papers kept their offices and presses around the turn of the twentieth century. The photograph was taken around 1902 and carries a copyright line for Goeggel and Weidner, a San Francisco studio that produced city views for sale. Because the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of downtown, images like this one now record a commercial district that no longer exists in the same form.
