Five girls are shown in this 1904 print, which its caption identifies as having been rescued from slavery in San Francisco's Chinatown. Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked extensively in the neighborhood, made the image, and the caption's subject tracings (Chinese in U.S., Slavery, Women) show how it was cataloged. Mission workers, especially Presbyterian women who ran a home for rescued girls, drew public attention to the forced servitude and prostitution of Chinese girls in these years. The caption information has not been verified, so the scene is best read as Genthe's staged view of a real social problem rather than a documented account of these five girls.
