The Sutro Baths sat on the rocky Pacific shoreline at Lands End, on the northwestern edge of San Francisco, where businessman and later mayor Adolph Sutro built a huge glass-roofed bathhouse that opened in 1896. Its several saltwater pools, some fed by seawater and heated, could hold thousands of swimmers at once, and the complex drew visitors from across the city. This stereograph card, published in Philadelphia around 1899 by C.H. Graves, was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave viewers of the period a three-dimensional sense of the place. Stereographs like this one were a popular way for people far from California to see its landmarks.
