Russian Hill is one of San Francisco's steepest and most distinctive neighborhoods, and this 1912 etching captures it in the years when the city was still rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake and fire. The hill takes its name, according to local tradition, from Russian sailors buried there in the 1800s, though the origin is debated. Cityscape etchings like this one, made during the 1910s, were a popular way to record the city's crests, stairways and rooftops in fine line. Its steep streets and clustered houses show why the hill became a favorite subject for artists of the period.
