Taken from the crest of Russian Hill, this albumen stereograph looks out over the Presidio and toward the Golden Gate, the strait where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific. The Library of Congress holds only one half of the original pair, issued as number 430 in a series titled "Gems of California Scenery," so the image survives as a single print of what was meant to be seen through a stereoscope. Views like this were popular in the 1860s, when the city was still growing into its hillsides and the Presidio was an active Army post guarding the entrance to the bay. The record's details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
