Few views of San Francisco show the Golden Gate from quite this height, with the strait opening between the headlands and the city's hills rising in the foreground. Telegraph Hill, the high point near the waterfront, was once a lookout where signalmen watched for incoming ships and relayed their arrival to the merchants below. The strait itself, first named by a naval officer in the 1840s, became the gateway through which the city's gold-rush-era trade passed, and the bridge that now spans it was not completed until 1937. Pay attention to how little of the modern skyline appears here, which places the scene in a much earlier period of the city's growth.
