The surf breaking near the Golden Gate sets this view apart from the usual downtown skylines on the San Francisco board, since the strait is where the Pacific pushes through a narrow opening into San Francisco Bay. Ocean swells funnel between the headlands here, and the currents can be strong, which made the entrance a long-watched hazard for sailing ships and later steamers. The Golden Gate itself took its name from the strait, a comparison to the Golden Horn in Constantinople that goes back to the 1840s. Shore scenes like this one show how close the open ocean sits to the city's edge.
