From Telegraph Hill, this view looks out over Black Point on the San Francisco shoreline toward the Golden Gate, the strait where the bay meets the Pacific. The hill rises steeply above the northern waterfront and was a popular vantage point in the 1860s, when the city's harbor was busy with shipping. The print is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, published in 1866 and meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Only this half is held by the Library, so the companion view cannot be compared with it.
