From a vantage point on Telegraph Hill, this stereograph looks across the rooftops and slopes of Russian Hill, one of the steep rises that shaped the layout of early San Francisco. Telegraph Hill took its name from a semaphore signal station set up in 1849 to announce arriving ships, and by the mid-1860s the city was crowding onto its hillsides after the Gold Rush boom. The print is an albumen stereo half, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the Library of Congress holds only one of the two images that made up the stereo pair. Stereographs like this were sold to parlor viewers who used them to see the city in three dimensions.
