Telegraph Hill, the steep knob on the city's northeast waterfront, is the subject here, seen from First Street on the Rincon Hill side. The print is one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the "Gems of California Scenery" series as number 441, and the Library of Congress holds only this left-eye view, so the paired image is missing from its collection. In the mid-1860s San Francisco was a booming port of wooden houses and new brick, and stereo cards like this one were sold widely to travelers and parlor viewers who wanted to see the city's dramatic hills.
