Telegraph Hill, the steep rise on the northeast edge of San Francisco, takes its name from a semaphore signal station that stood on its summit in the 1850s and relayed word of approaching ships. This half stereograph, number 439 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, shows the hill from a reservoir. Stereographs like this were made as paired images that appeared three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope, and they sold widely in the 1860s. The Library holds only one print of the pair, and its caption details come from an old card that has not been independently verified.
