Street cooking in the aftermath of the April 1906 earthquake and fire shows how San Francisco residents fed themselves when their homes and kitchens were gone. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless, and many set up makeshift stoves and open fires on sidewalks and in vacant lots, often cooking with whatever fuel and salvaged cookware they could find. The photographer, Arnold Genthe, was known for his street and portrait work in the city, and his pictures of this period are among the most widely reproduced records of the disaster. The original caption card is noted as unverified, so the exact location and the people shown are not documented here.
