Soldiers queuing for supper in Portsmouth Square set this stereograph apart from the many views of ruined buildings from the same disaster. The square, one of the city's oldest public plazas and near the Chinatown and financial districts, became a gathering point after the earthquake and fire of April 1906, when Army troops were brought in to keep order and relief kitchens fed displaced residents. Stereo cards like this were printed as pairs so that a viewer using a stereoscope saw one three-dimensional scene. The copyright credit to C.L. Wasson comes from an older catalog record and has not been independently verified.
