Taken on April 18, 1906, the day the earthquake struck San Francisco, this print shows people displaced from their homes and gathered at Jefferson Park. The shaking was followed by fires that burned for several days and destroyed much of the city, leaving many residents to camp in open spaces like parks, often with whatever belongings they could carry. Images of such refugee camps remain valuable records of how the disaster affected ordinary households.
