A barber works in Jefferson Park, with a billboard nearby, showing how ordinary trades carried on among refugees after the April 1906 earthquake and fire. Much of San Francisco was left homeless, and tent camps and makeshift shelters filled parks and open lots while the Army helped run relief. Barbers and other tradespeople set up small businesses amid the tents, and the scene reflects the effort to restore daily life in the ruins. The card was issued as a stereograph copyrighted by Tom M. Phillips, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth.
