Steiner Street's Catholic church stands here as a twisted, collapsed ruin, one of the church wrecks the stereograph's caption singles out from the wider damage. The April 18, 1906, earthquake and the fires that followed destroyed much of San Francisco, and churches were among the many buildings that lost roofs, walls and towers. The card was published by the H.C. White Co., which produced stereo views for home stereoscopes, so the twin images were meant to give a three-dimensional sense of the ruins. The catalog notes that its caption information is unverified and old, so the exact church and its condition are worth checking against other sources.
