A stereograph card of the city as seen from Nob Hill, a neighborhood of hotels and mansions on the city's high ground, shows the aftermath of the April 18, 1906, earthquake and the fires that followed. The fires spread through much of San Francisco over the next several days, and Nob Hill's grand buildings were among those lost. Cards like this were printed as pairs, so a viewer using a stereoscope could see the scene in three dimensions. The record notes a copyright by Tom M. Phillips, but its date and details come from an old caption card and have not been verified.
