Dead cattle lie among fallen masonry in this stereograph, a reminder that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake of April 18 killed livestock as well as people. Many of the city's brick walls and buildings collapsed in the shaking, and the fires that followed burned much of the city over the next several days. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers and viewed through a stereoscope, so the scene reached readers as a near three-dimensional view of the damage. The catalog record notes a copyright held by Tom M. Phillips, though its caption details are unverified and should be read with that in mind.
