A tent post office in the Hamilton Square refugee camp shows how the city kept basic services running after the April 18, 1906 earthquake and fire. Fires that followed the quake destroyed much of San Francisco, leaving tens of thousands homeless, and parks and open lots filled with tents and temporary shelters. Mail service was one way to reconnect residents with family and business outside the city. This image is a stereograph, a card printed as a pair of slightly offset photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, appeared as a single three-dimensional scene. The card is credited to C.H. Graves, though the record's details are unverified.
