From the Ferry Tower at the foot of Market Street, this view looks west across a downtown core wrecked by the April 18, 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed. The fires burned for several days and destroyed much of the city's commercial district, leaving rows of chimneys and broken walls where buildings had stood. A vantage point on the waterfront shows how far the damage stretched across the streets. The caption card that came with the picture is unverified, so its details are best checked against other sources.
