The record gives no specific building or street, so this view stands for the wider ruin left by the April 18, 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed it. Those fires burned for several days and destroyed much of the city's core, leaving rows of collapsed masonry and gutted frames across neighborhoods that had been dense with homes and businesses only weeks earlier. Photographs like this one were among the records that showed the scale of the loss to the rest of the country. The image also belongs to a larger body of work by photographers who documented the damage in the days and months that followed.
