Few pictures show the earthquake's effect on ordinary wood-frame houses as plainly as this stereograph, where the buildings have shifted and tumbled off their foundations. The earthquake of April 18, 1906, shook San Francisco hard, and fires that followed destroyed much of the city, but many homes were wrecked by the shaking alone, since their light frames were often not bolted to the footings beneath them. H.C. White Co. published the card and registered its copyright in July 1907, and it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the ruined rooflines a sense of depth.
