A collapsed hotel on Valencia Street, with people dipping water from the street where a water main had burst, sets this print apart from the many views of ruin in the 1906 series. The caption states that most of the shaking was centered here and that the ground settled about 12 feet, a contemporary account worth reading as a description rather than a surveyed measurement. The April 18 earthquake broke the city's water mains, and with hydrants dry, the fires that followed burned for days. Scenes like this one show how residents improvised water supplies in the disaster's first hours and days.
