A lone figure stands above the rubble in this view of San Francisco's Chinatown, one of the many scenes the 1906 earthquake and fire left across the city. The photograph is by Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco and became known for his pictures of Chinatown's streets and residents. The caption card uses an outdated term for the man, a reminder of how people in the picture were often labeled at the time. The earthquake struck on April 18, 1906, and the fires that followed destroyed much of the city's central districts, including parts of Chinatown.
