Fort Mason, an Army post on the bay shore at the foot of Van Ness Avenue, became a relief center after the 1906 earthquake, where displaced residents came for food, shelter and aid. The fires that followed the April 18 quake destroyed much of the city's residential districts, leaving many families homeless and dependent on such sites. The stereo card, numbered 8730 and issued by the H.C. White Company, was meant to be viewed through a hand viewer so the crowds and tents appeared in three dimensions. The caption details were recorded long after the event and have not been independently verified.
