Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who settled in San Francisco in the early 1900s, turned his camera on the crowded streets of Chinatown, and this print shows the fish market there. Genthe was known for candid street scenes of the neighborhood, which he photographed in the years before the 1906 earthquake and fire reshaped much of the city. Markets like this one were the daily heart of Chinatown, where families bought fresh seafood and produce, and the picture offers a glimpse of that busy commerce. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of the exposure remains unconfirmed.
