Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco's Chinatown in the early twentieth century, made this print of a butcher at work, one of a series he titled as studies of occupations. The record gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but Genthe's Chinatown pictures were made around the 1896 to 1906 period, before the 1906 earthquake and fire reshaped the neighborhood. Genthe's photographs of workers and shopkeepers offer a close look at daily commerce in a community that outsiders often viewed through stereotype.
