A mother and her small daughter walk along a Chinatown sidewalk, while behind them a wall is covered with old, torn, and faded handbills. The photograph is credited to Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer who spent much of the 1890s photographing San Francisco's Chinatown and its streets. The record dates the picture only to the 189-, so the exact year is unconfirmed, but the weathered notices suggest a neighborhood where paper announcements were pasted up on walls. Genthe's street scenes like this one are valued for showing everyday family life that many visitors to Chinatown at the time did not stop to record.
