Three children crossing a San Francisco street hand in hand give this view of Chinatown its everyday, human focus. The record carries no date, but the photographer, Arnold Genthe, a German-born portraitist, made many street scenes in the neighborhood in the early 1900s, including work published as *Pictures of Old Chinatown* (1908). His images caught daily life in a community that outsiders often viewed through stereotypes. The caption information is unverified, so the exact date and location should be confirmed against other sources before citing.
