Two boys stand facing the camera amid a crowded street market in San Francisco's Chinatown, their direct gaze setting this scene apart from the more distant street views that often accompany it. The photograph is credited to Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer who spent years documenting the neighborhood's streets, merchants and residents around the turn of the century. Genthe later published many of these images in his book *Pictures of Old Chinatown* (1908). The record dates the print to about 1900, a date that remains uncertain, but the district it shows was largely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.
