The Chinese market on Sacramento Street appears in one half of a stereograph pair, issued in 1866 as number 393 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. By the 1860s San Francisco's Chinese community had grown substantially, drawn by the Gold Rush and later by railroad work, and Sacramento Street lay within the commercial heart of Chinatown. Albumen prints like this one were mounted on card and viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor entertainment of the period. The library holds only this single print, and its caption details come from an older card, so some specifics remain unverified.
